FAQ'S

What is Pilates?

Originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, pilates has developed and evolved over the years to become a popular form of low impact exercise to improve health and wellbeing.  Whilst Pilates is challenging it is also a very achievable form of exercise for everyone and is easily adapted to different abilities, bodies and personal goals.

With a focus on building core strength, joint stability and mobility, it pays particular attention to breathing, alignment and core connection to help rebalance and strengthen the whole body. It can be a challenging workout or can aid recovery from injury or musculoskeletal conditions. Popular for helping with back pain and poor posture, pilates can help connect the mind and body allowing you to become more aware of the way you move in daily life. Mat pilates really is a form of movement that you get out what you put in. Do the basics correctly and with intension and they can challenge the body as much as the more complex exercises. Pilates also incorporates co-ordination, balance, resistance and stability work. Classes often include small equipment such as the resistance bands, mini stability ball and small hand weights.

STOTT Pilates® is a contemporary approach to the original Pilates method based on modern principles of exercise science and rehabilitation. Whilst my original training is via STOTT Pilates I continue to explore and develop myself across a wide range of pilates education which can vary quite widely but allows me to learn a range of different techniques and skills that I can bring to my clients.

Larger Pilates equipment such as the 'Reformer' work the body against resistance springs that challenge the whole body. It has a moving carriage to generate awareness and control and a footbar, straps and ropes to provide support to enhance range of motion. Clients often find the reformer a quicker way to achieve results and feel muscles working more predominately than mat work (which can be easy to cheat!) If you are interested in trying the reformer I offer private reformer sessions from my home studio. For more information, click here >

Who are the classes suitable for?

Intermediate/Advanced Pilates

This class is suitable for either those who already have some experience of pilates or those who are generally physically active. If however you are returning to exercise after a long time, have any recent injuries or pain related issues the beginners class would be a more suitable option for you to start with initially. The class uses progressions of exercises to suit different levels and does include some intermediate/advanced exercises to challenge the body.

Beginners/Mixed Level Pilates

This class is suitable for complete beginners and those who may be recovering from injury or have pain related issues. The class can be modified as necessary and the pace and options remain manageable for everyone in class. This is a great place to start if you want to start at a slower pace and learn from the basics, are returning to pilates or exercise after a long period, if you are recovering from injury or if you are part of the active ageing community.

Private Reformer & Equipment Sessions

These sessions are bespoke so suitable for anyone. I only accept female clients to private sessions at my home studio (but my classes are open to both male and female clients). On your first session we discuss your goals, I introduce you to pilates and all the equipment and together we work out if it is the best option for you.

Please contact me to discuss your situation if you have any injuries or issues and I can advise which classes will be suitable for you and how I can make changes to accommodate your needs. I am happy to do free online consultations to discuss any questions or concerns regarding my classes.

Where is the Wickford Class?

My Monday Wickford classes are at Bartlett Park, the clubhouse for Wickford Town Football Club. It is located just off of the main Shotgate roundabout and has plenty of free on site parking.

The hall is a lovely bright and airy space with views over the lovely green pitches and surrounded by trees giving us the opportunity to move our classes to our own private outdoor space in the nice weather! There are plenty of windows and doors for natural ventilation and toilet facilities.

I would always advise for you to bring a bottle of water to class, its beneficial to stay hydrated as part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle or advisable when participating in exercise.
